Healeys in the Hills

Can you find the subliminal message?

This year Diane and I will be going to the Black Hills, which is located in my home state of South Dakota. The round trip from L.A. to Deadwood is over 2,800 miles, many of these miles will be desert driving……. did I mention we will be towing the Healey. I might be crazy, but at least I’m not insane. Joining us will be 24 other cars from the Austin Healey Association of Southern California, including many friends from our past adventures in the U.K. and the eight European countries we visited in 2018. Most of our journey we will be traveling on our own as everyone is employing different modes of transport to get their cars to Deadwood; including driving their Healeys (YIKES!), others will be towing like us, and the rest will have their cars shipped directly to Deadwood.

Our journey to Deadwood will take us five days as Diane and I will stop to visit Zion and Bryce on our way there. On the way back home we plan on visiting Moab, Arches, and Capital Reef. On our way to South Dakota we will join three other Healeys in Evanston, Wyoming. From there we will caravan to Casper, Wyoming to spend the night. Then bright and early on Friday we are off to Deadwood.

Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Colorado and South Dakota are states that my family and I are quite familiar. We traversed these states many times as this territory was inconveniently located between us and Sioux Falls. This trip will be slightly different I hope. There will be air conditioning and we will stop along the way to smell the roses. We won’t have to wait outside a diner as Dad works with the staff to ready a table for 10 or more. I will however miss being with my siblings, singing off key to sheet music (mostly Mitch Miller), playing games, telling jokes at the expense of your brother or sister and Pop driving like a man on a mission, smoking his Camel cigarettes with the occasional threat of turning the car around and going home. All the while us kids were just wondering,”are we there yet?”

Hi Ho Healey…..Away!

  1. This sounds like such a fun trip! One of the best decisions that Thom and I ever made was to give ourselves time to drive (relatively) slowly across the country when we moved to Illinois. We got to see a lot of people and lot of beautiful and interesting places – including Casper, WY, which is where we lived when I was born. I’m looking forward to following your adventures and spotting more of your subliminal messages 🙂
